Mikrotik Wireless overview 2025
One of the questions I often see is what Mikrotik is doing with wireless and what they are supporting. This blog post is going to outline some of the key Mikrotik wireless features and standards supported.
Frequency Bands and Standards
- 2.4 GHz Band: Widely used for its extensive range and compatibility, this band supports the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standards. It’s ideal for general-purpose wireless networking, especially in environments with limited interference.
- 5 GHz Band: Operating under the IEEE 802.11a/n/ac standards, the 5 GHz band offers higher data rates and reduced interference, making it suitable for high-throughput applications and densely populated areas.
- 60 GHz Band: Utilized for high-speed point-to-point connections, this band supports the IEEE 802.11ad standard. It’s perfect for short-range, high-capacity links, providing gigabit speeds with minimal latency.
Wireless Protocols
MikroTik’s RouterOS supports various wireless protocols to enhance performance and reliability:
- Nstreme: A proprietary point-to-point protocol designed to improve throughput and latency by optimizing frame aggregation and channel utilization.
- Nv2 (Nstreme version 2): An advanced Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) protocol that mitigates the hidden node problem, ensuring efficient communication in point-to-multipoint setups.
Product Offerings
Mikrotik’s wireless product lineup includes a variety of devices tailored to different use cases:
- Home and Office Solutions:
- hAP Series: Compact routers offering dual-band capabilities and multiple Ethernet ports, suitable for small to medium-sized homes and offices.
- cAP Series: Ceiling-mounted access points designed for unobtrusive deployment in indoor environments, providing seamless wireless coverage.

- Outdoor and Carrier-Grade Solutions:
- LHG Series: High-gain antennas integrated with wireless radios, ideal for long-distance point-to-point links.
- SXTsq Series: Compact and lightweight outdoor devices designed for point-to-point and CPE applications.

- 60 GHz Solutions:
- Wireless Wire: A kit comprising two pre-paired devices that establish a high-speed, secure 60 GHz link, replacing Ethernet cables for short distances.
- Cube 60Pro: A device designed for establishing robust 60 GHz wireless links with improved stability and range.

Software Support
All MikroTik wireless devices run on RouterOS, a versatile operating system that provides extensive configuration options, including routing, firewall, bandwidth management, and wireless access point functionalities. RouterOS ensures that users have granular control over their network settings, enabling customized solutions for diverse networking requirements.
