My 49″ widescreen monitor experience
Being a geek, I am always looking for new ways to improve my setup. Most of what I work on these days are ISP networks. Over the years, I have tried many different monitor setups.
The latest iteration of my setup has replaced my 34″ Acer curved widescreen and a dell side car rotated 90 degrees. This setup has served me well for the past 6 months. I have been seriously lacking the ability to do side-by-side comparisons of items. This is when I went down the rabbit hole of 49″ widescreen monitors.
My rationale was I wanted a workspace where I could have one set of windows in front of me to concentrate on. The 34″ curve was not wide enough to have two decent browser-type windows side by side. Adding a third monitor would have to mean a second monitor of almost the same size to make my mind right. A smaller monitor would just bug me and eat away. Dual 34″ monitors was way too much desk real estate. If I stepped down to 24″ or 27″ monitors one would always be off to the side and I would be back to the same dilemma. How do I have enough real estate to have multiple browser windows open on the same screen?
In steps, the 49″ widescreen. After pouring over the reviews on Amazon I settled on an Asus RG monitor. This checked all the boxes. Wide Screen. Check. Adjustable Stand. Check. Display port check. Decent curve to it. Check.
Getting the monitor setup was a breeze. The packaging led you through the steps. The hardest part was getting the over four-foot box up to the 3rd level of my house. I hurriedly cleared off my desk and set this up. I hooked up my 16″ 2018 Macbook pro via display cable and away we went. The 1080p resolution was not enough. So I upped it to 5120×1440. this was not a native resolution so it was labeled “low resolution” in the mac display. The text was slightly blurry but I could learn to live with it. Then the monitor started dimming. I would unplug the cable and the monitor would be bright again, at least for a few minutes.

After some searches on ASUS’s website, I found this is a method employed to “lengthen the life of the LCD display”. A quick chat with their online support confirmed I could not turn this off. After playing with some settings I noticed I could not change any settings on Displayport. I switched over to HDMI and I could adjust the settings. During my short time using HDMI the screen did not dim. Something must be different. By this time the blurriness of the resolution was starting to get to me.
In steps, the Dell 49″ widescreen. As customary with Amazon, this came very quickly. just like the Asus, a lot of detail was paid to the unboxing process. The order of what to unbox items was clearly marked with numbers upon opening the box. First came the base, then the stand with the piece that holds the monitor, and then the cables. Upon lifint the styrofoam the actual panel was packed quite well.
I won’t go into a whole unboxing thing. The following video has a decent unboxing of the monitor.
Some notes if you buy this monitor. Tip number one is to make sure the monitor stand has the required height adjustment for you. If it’s too low you can consider setting it on something to raise it up.
The distance away from your eyes is important. Too close and you will find yourself leaning to the side to see. Too far away and things will be small due to the resolution.
